The Hunters began the draft already looking toward next year. They already have ten picks in the first three rounds of the 2010 draft. This year, the goal was to pick up some decent prospects and later on to fill games with players who at least had a chance to contribute in the future. The initial target of the first round was Travis Snider, but he was snatched up by the Rampage two picks in front of the Hunters. After much deliberation, the Hunters picked up Taylor Teagarden, the young catcher from the Texas Rangers. In the second and third rounds, the Hunters added Jed Lowrie and Carlos Gonzalez, two more young'uns. Lowrie is the possible replacement for Michael Young, who is moving to third base.
As the middle rounds progressed, the Hunters added a couple more prospects in Brandon Wood and Gio Gonzalez, but the need to fill starts and pick up relief innings dominated the rest of the draft. Notable acquisitions included starter Fausto Carmona and reliever Scot Shields, both of whom the Hunters hope will rebound in '09.
With only a third round pick in the National League draft, the Hunters picked up young Arizona pitcher Max Scherzer. Later in the day, they dealt a future 12th to pick up another pick with which to take another young pitcher, Chris Perez of the Cardinals.
